Why TeNDER?

In Europe alone, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than 10 million people are living with dementia and that by 2030 these numbers will likely double. The prevalence of Parkinson’s disease is also set to rise, according to the European Brain Council, with more than 1.2 million patients currently living in Europe. The WHO also reports that cardiovascular diseases are considered the leading causes of premature death and disability in Europe and worldwide.

affecTive basEd iNtegrateD carE for betteR Quality of Life (TeNDER) is a multi-sectoral project funded by Horizon 2020, the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. From the end of 2019 to the end of 2022, TeNDER will develop an integrated care model to manage multi-morbidity in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (and other forms of dementia), Parkinson’s disease, and cardiovascular disease.

The Project

By combining user-friendly technologies and substantial research experience, our project aims to help improve the quality of life of patients and those who surround them. Moreover, it will test ways to ease communication between different health and care providers who treat patients with multi-morbidities.

To this end, TeNDER will perform 5 large-scale pilots targeting patients with Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular diseases, and/or Parkinson’s. In each pilot setting (i.e., in-hospital, at home, and in day- and full-time care homes), patients will be monitored using sensors, cameras that capture movement, affective recognition technology, and wristbands that record basic vitals, etc. TeNDER’s technical, legal and ethical experts will ensure that all personal data is protected according the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and that our approach complies with rigorous ethical guidelines.

Coordinator

The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) currently gathers more than 3,000 faculty members, around 38,000 undergraduate students, and around 6,000 postgraduate students, covering mostly engineering disciplines. The institution has a strong commitment to R&D and innovation initiatives, bringing together more than 200 research units and several research institutes, as well as technological centres.

UPM will contribute to TeNDER through the Visual Telecommunication Applications Research Group (GATV), and with the support of the UPM European projects office and the Telecommunication Engineering School (ETS Ingenieros de Telecomunicación). UPM possesses broad expertise leading and participating in national and European projects, as well as extensive experience with international collaborations. GATV’s main activities are oriented to sensing and computer vision, Future Internet technical innovation, and the application to different disciplines such as e-Health, leisure, games.
